Édition originale des compositions de Lautrec, tirée à 200 ex. « Lhistoire de cet exemplaire illustré demeure mystérieuse. On sait que Toulouse-Lautrec songeait en janvier 1896 à illustrer ce roman naturaliste dans lequel Edmond de Goncourt peint la prostitution et lunivers carcéral féminin. La curiosité de lartiste avait probablement été attirée par linterdit qui avait frappé ladaptation de loeuvre au théâtre Antoine en 1890. Mais lintérêt du romancier à légard du peintre et de son oeuvre fut loin dêtre réciproque. Lorsquil sen rendit compte, Toulouse-Lautrec arrêta là son projet. Le livre était-il destiné à montrer à Edmond de Goncourt le parti illustratif envisagé ? Nétait-ce pas plutôt une sorte de carnet de travail ? Impossible de répondre avec certitude. Reste la vérité humaine des images saisies à la source, lévidence graphique de leur mise en page, la touche du coloriste. Cet exemple unique chez Toulouse-Lautrec dillustration directe sur un livre avait dabord appartenu au galeriste Maurice Joyant, ami du peintre, puis à sa collaboratrice Madeleine Dortu, qui en publia, en 1931, un fac-similé. » (BNF, à loccasion de lacquisition des originaux en 2008).
