<p>Peintre, graveur, mais aussi critique d’art, écrivain et poète, Émile Bernard est une personnalité majeure dont la place capitale dans l’élaboration de l’art moderne n’a pas toujours été reconnue. A la fin des années 1880, il inaugure le style cloisonniste, dialoguant avec Gauguin et Van Gogh au sein du foyer d’innovation picturale que constitue alors Pont-Aven. Après la controverse sur l’invention du symbolisme en peinture, qui en 1891 l’oppose violemment à Gauguin, Bernard s’installe au Caire, sans perdre cependant contact avec Paris. Cet exil égyptien est le lieu d’une profonde mutation qui l’amène à reconsidérer la stylisation schématique et la recherche de primitivisme symboliste. La découverte des maîtres anciens l’incitera cependant à renouer progressivement avec la tradition, dans des peintures au caractère monumental. De retour en France, il est en 1904 le premier à aller à Aix voir Cézanne, sur qui il a laissé des témoignages fondamentaux et qui le marquera profondément. Sa peinture se veut alors polémique. Mais, loin de se définir par un traditionalisme suranné, son art porte toujours la marque d’une personnalité curieuse et tourmentée, à la recherche de l’absolu artistique.
