Autour des trois chefs-d'?uvre de Rembrandt conserves au Musee Jacquemart-Andre, le catalogue d'exposition retracera les moments forts de la carriere de cet artiste majeur. C'est autour des Pelerins d'Emmaus (1629) que sera concue la premiere partie de l'ouvrage, dedie a l'epoque de Leyde (1625-1631) durant laquelle Rembrandt se revele, avec des sujets essentiellement historiques et bibliques. On percoit dans ses ?uvres une parfaite maitrise technique, la presence de plus en plus evidente du clair-obscur et l'approfondissement de la comprehension psychologique des sujets qu'il traite. Une deuxieme partie sera dediee aux annees de son triomphe a Amsterdam, de 1631 a 1635. Rembrandt realise alors de nombreux portraits de notables, comme le Portrait d'Amalia von Solms (1632), epouse du prince Frederic-Henri d'Orange-Nassau, stathouder de cinq des sept Provinces Unies. Celui-ci acquiert a partir de 1630 plusieurs tableaux de Rembrandt, dotes d'une extraordinaire energie, egalement visible dans ses gravures et dessins, veritable contrepoint aux peintures. Les annees 1652-1669 sont celles du ? style tardif ? de Rembrandt, qui atteint un sommet dans son art, comme en temoigne le Portrait d'Arnold Tholinx (1656). Le style du maitre se trouve en rupture la peinture contemporaine neerlandaise, realiste, lisse et subtile. Rembrandt, lui, simplifie les formes et les couleurs. Ses dessins deviennent comme ? cubistes ? , sa palette se restreint et va a l'essentiel. En presentant une quarantaine de tableaux, repartis en trois chapitres, ce catalogue d'exposition presente trois etapes-cles de la creation de Rembrandt et permet d'apprehender de facon tres claire l'evolution de ce peintre qui a domine l'art hollandais du XVIIe siecle.
