2 vols 12mo (200 x 137 mm.) of: I: [3] ff, [76] ff, [1] f; II: 52 ff of drawings, 17 ff bl , 7 ff of text and sketches + 1 pastedown. Copy no. 55 of 200, uncut. Rare copy of this sumptuous small edition, reproducing two of Delacroix's notebooks written during his trip to Morocco. The painter Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) visited Morocco from January to June 1832. He was part of the diplomatic mission of Charles-Henri-Edgar, comte de Mornay. During his stay, he produced drawings and notes in seven sketchbooks. The Frick Art Reference Library holds facsimiles of two of the sketchbooks. The facsimiles were produced in 1909 (Musée du Louvre album), published by André. Marty, Paris, and in 1913 (Château de Chantilly album), published by J. Terquem & Cie, Paris, of which our copy is no. 55. The introductory text, printed on Hollande laid paper, includes transcriptions by Jean Guiffrey (pp. 49-76) giving a description of each facsimile. Jean Guiffrey (1870-1952) was a curator and art historian specializing in French primitives and the 18th century. Initially based at the Musée du Louvre, he became curator of paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1911-1918), before returning to the Louvre, where he was in charge of paintings and drawings. The drawings and colors are remarkably well reproduced. A fine, very fresh copy.‎
