De son vivant, Daumier tait surtout connu comme satiriste politique et social. Apr s sa mort, les gens ont galement commenc appr cier la qualit esth tique de ses peintures et sculptures. Daumier a d but sa carri re comme graphiste apr s une formation en lithographie. En 1832, il fut emprisonn pour l se-majest pendant six mois pour une satire critique de la monarchie sur Louis Philippe de France, qu'il d peint comme Gargantua. partir de la fin des ann es 1940, il utilise plus souvent l'aquarelle et l'huile que la lithographie. Dans les ann es 1970, sa vue s'est d t rior e et en 1873, il tait presque aveugle. Daumier tait admir par Camille Corot (qui l'a sauv de la pauvret lorsqu'il est devenu aveugle), Eug ne Delacroix, Charles Baudelaire, Honor de Balzac et de nombreux expressionnistes du XXe si cle. Une ?uvre de Daumier, Le Christ et ses ap tres, est expos e au Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Les caricatures d'avocats et de juges de Daumier sont toujours tr s populaires parmi les avocats et ornent de nombreux cabinets d'avocats. Plus de 7 500 ?uvres de Daumier sont conserv es au Hammer Museum de Los Angeles.
