L'ouvrage eut, dès sa première parution, un énorme succès, en raison du thème de la beauté abondamment traité au cours de l'ouvrage, notamment par des chapitres sur les poils, les oreilles, le teint du visage...En fin de volume on trouvera un chapitre sur les maladies extraordinaires, comme la mal d'amour, ainsi qu'un autre consacré aux maladies spirituelles. Provenance : exemplaire de Marie Marguerite MEYSSONNIER, avec son nom frappé au centre du premier plat, fille unique de Lazare Meyssonnier qui était docteur en médecine de l'université de Montpellier, conseiller et médecin du Roi puis de son altesse royale de Dombes.
