Ce volume a été écrit par François Crastre. — Sous la direction d'Henry Roujon, secrétaire perpétuel de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts, Pierre Lafitte (1872-1938) fonde en 1909 la collection, « Les Peintres illustres / Artistic-Bibliothèque en couleurs », proposant des biographies de peintres avec des reproductions de tableaux en volumes cartonnés. C'était la première fois que l'édition en couleurs d'une série de biographies d'artistes était mise à la portée de tous. Initalement prévue en 24 volumes (un par mois), le succès amènera l'éditeur à publier une deuxième série (volumes 25 à 48), puis une troisième, jusqu'à atteindre 66 volumes parus à la mi-1914 (sur 72 prévus : il semble que le déclenchement de la guerre ai provoqué l'arrêt de la collection). Les textes ne sont pas signés, mais sont d'un bon niveau. Il est certain qu'Henry Roujon a écrit lui-même un certain nombre de volumes de la première série ; par ailleurs on sait qu'Henri Barbusse a écrit celui sur Meissonier et François Crastre ceux sur Rosa Bonheur, Bastien-Lepage, Puvis de Chavannes, Le Corrège, Véronèse, Henner et Goya.
