Cette monographie, la plus importante depuis de très nombreuses années, présente les dernières découvertes concernant l'œuvre de Georges de La Tour. L'ensemble des tableaux du "Maître des nuits" sera reproduit, ainsi que les œuvres attribuées à son atelier. De très nombreuses figures de comparaison (Caravage, Annibale Carracci, Pieter Bruegel l'Ancien, Simon Vouet, Frères Le Nain) complèteront cet ouvrage de référence. En l'espace d'un siècle, Georges de La Tour (1593-1652) est passé d'un quasi anonymat à une notoriété comparable à celle des artistes français les plus admirés. En un peu plus d'une quarantaine de tableaux de sa main, La Tour prend place au Panthéon de la peinture du XVIIe siècle. Ses portraits de saints, de paysans et de musiciens sont parmi les plus beaux mais aussi parmi les plus énigmatiques de l'Histoire de l'art.
