Avec Jean Boucher de Bourges, Jean Chalette de Toulouse ou bien encore Horace Le Blanc de Lyon, Guy Francois appartient a cette generation de peintres francais qui ont produit l?essentiel de leur ?uvre en province, entre ces deux puissants courants de la creation artistique que furent la seconde ecole de Fontainebleau et la peinture parisienne du temps de Simon Vouet. Guy Francois a fait l?essentiel de sa carriere au Puy-en-Velay. Vraisemblablement ne en 1578, il se rend des le debut du XVIIe siecle a Rome ou il reste jusqu?en 1613. Dans la Rome des papes Clement VIII Aldobrandini et Paul V Borghese, il cotoie le Caravage, Annibal Carrache ainsi que le cavalier d?Arpin et le jeune Guido Reni. Mais c?est surtout du Venitien Carlo Saraceni dont il se sent le plus proche. Revenu dans sa province natale, Guy Francois n?oubliera jamais l?Italie et toute sa peinture est impregnee de reminiscences caravagesques temperees de classicisme bolonais. Guy Francois peint des tableaux aux antipodes du manierisme en vogue en France dans les annees 1600-1615. En cela, il peut etre considere comme un precurseur, ayant ete parmi les premiers a introduire le caravagisme en France, pratiquement au meme moment que le Flamand Louis Finson.
