Binding with wear and inner hinge weak, but in completely original state, with no restorations. Only some light scattered brownspotting and a worm-tract to inner margin, just occasionally touching a few letters. Book-plate to pasted-down front end-paper. A lovely copy. (4), CCXLIII ff.
The scarce first edition of Saliat's translation of the complete Histories of Herodotus, being the extremely popular first French edition and arguably the most important French edition of the work ever published. Saliat's monumental 1556-translation of Herodutus was extremely influential end widely used and quoted. It greatly influenced the way that Herodotus was used and understood in Renaissance France. It was used by virtually all contemporary French intellectuals as the main reference - as for instance Sandys points out, it is from this that all of Montaigne's Herodotus-quotations are taken (Sandys, vol. II, p. 197). Pierre Saliat had published a small work in 1552 consisting the the first three books of Herodotus, and in 1556, his monumental translation of the complete work appeared" for the first time, all nine books were accessible in the French language. ""Little is known of Saliat's life except that he had produced two previous translations from Latin, Erasmus' ""On Methods of Instructing Children"" and a collection of Roman speeches. Both translations of Herdotus are dedicated to the king, Henry II, and Saliat notes that the work on the first three books had taken him six years to complete and that it had taken him a further five years to translate the remaining six books. In the preface to the 1556 translation, Saliat compares at length the scale and grandeur of the Persian Wars with Henry's recent invasion of Germany. Henry's deeds are portrayed as greater than those described by Herodotus... [The preface] reads as a salutary encomium of Henry's military and political prowess."" In short, Saliat views Herodotus' work as a manual for or collection of examples of warfare that is fully transferable to other times, rather than a mere memoralization of great deeds. Gilt boarders to boards. Small repair to upper right corner of title-page, not affecting text. An exceptionally fine and clean copy. The scarce first edition of the controversial first French translation - bound partly uncut and with the original wrappers - of Darwin's masterpiece, one of the most important books ever printed. This famed translation - done by self-taught female scholar - ended up causing quite a stir and adding to the theory of evolution some for Darwin quite unforeseen interpretations. Because of this, the translator, Clémence Royer, gained notoriety as one of the leading eugenicists of the time. Darwin was very eager to have his work published in French. It is not known exactly how he happened on Royer as the translator, but as she was familiar with the works of Lamarck and Malthus, immediately realized the importance of Darwin's work and also had close connections to the French publisher Guillaumin, she must have seemed perfect for the job. She had a naturalist help her with the biologically technical parts and made an excellent job of the translation. There was one big problem, however - she went well beyond her role as a translator and added a 60-page preface and numerous explanatory footnotes that Darwin had not seen before publication. In the preface, she challenged the belief in religious revelation, she discussed the application of natural selection to the human race, and she presented a pure eugenic theory, explaining the negative consequences of protecting the weak and the infirm. She also promoted her concept of progressive evolution, which had more in common with the ideas of Lamarck than with those of Darwin. Right after having seen the translation, Darwin wrote in a letter to the American botanist, Asa Gray: ""I received 2 or 3 days ago a French translation of the Origin by a Madelle. Royer, who must be one of the cleverest & oddest women in Europe: is ardent deist & hates Christianity, & declares that natural selection & the struggle for life will explain all morality, nature of man, politicks &c &c!!!. She makes some very curious & good hits, & says she shall publish a book on these subjects, & a strange production it will be.""After some reflection, however, Darwin began having more serious doubts, and about a month later he wrote to the French zoologist Armand de Quatrefages: ""I wish the translator had known more of Natural History" she must be a clever, but singular lady" but I never heard of her, till she proposed to translate my book."" He had now also read the footnotes and wrote to Joseph Hooker: ""Almost everywhere in Origin, when I express great doubt, she appends a note explaining the difficulty or saying that there is none whatever!! It is really curious to know what conceited people there are in the world.""Freeman No 655 (Freeman does not mention the plate, which is present here).

Chez Eugene Fromentin, la primaute de l'Orient se fait sentir dans tout son oeuvre peint et ses ecrits de voyage. Ne a la Rochelle, il avait des son enfance, formule un attachement aux grandes lignes fuyantes de l'horizon atlantique, perspective qui devait le preparer a affronter cette autre immensite qui lui semblait comme la mer, moins la couleur, c'est a dire le desert. Fromentin contemple le monde islamique avec une discretion absolue, rassemblant d'amples renseignements anthropologiques et linguistiques, sans forcement s'en servir dans son oeuvre. Sa maniere de voir se rattache aux lieux, aux ambiances, aux atmospheres, plutot qu'aux evenements dramatiques. /////// Since the first edition of this book, La Vie et l'oeuvre d'Eugene Fromentin, published in 1987 and awarded the Roger Bonniot Prize by the Academie de Saintonge in 1988, over sixty paintings and drawings by Eugene Fromentin have appeared on the market. To complete the Correspondance generale of this painter and writer, published in 1995, and his intellectual biography, Beaux-arts et Belles-lettres : la vie d'Eugene Fromentin, published in 2006, the authors, James Thompson and Barbara Wright, have produced a revised and enlarged version of their work. To accompany these new images, the text has been up-dated and some black and white illustrations have been replaced by color. Furthermore, James Thompson and Barbara Wright have added, as an Appendix, an illustrated catalogue of nearly all the drawings in the family collection, a collection which remained virtually intact from the death of Eugene Fromentin in 1876 until that of his great-grandson, Erik Dahl, in 1986. This catalogue bears testimony to a unique collection, before its dispersal. Since their authenticity is beyond question, the items in this catalogue constitute a valuable resource in the identification of future paintings which may surface on the market. This new edition will provide the basis for detailed genetical studies of the major Orientalist paintings by Fromentin, while illuminating his talents as a draughtsman.. C'est en janvier 1666 quil fait ses premières expériences sur la lumière et sa décomposition. Au cours des années 1670 à 1672, Newton étudie la réfraction de la lumière et démontre quun prisme décompose la lumière blanche en un spectre de couleurs, et qu'un objectif avec un deuxième prisme recompose le spectre multicolore en lumière blanche. Il fait passer les rayons du Soleil à travers un prisme, produisant l'arc-en-ciel de couleurs du spectre visible. Auparavant, ce phénomène était considéré comme si le verre du prisme avait de la couleur cachée. Newton analyse alors cette expérience. Comme il a déjà réussi à reproduire le blanc avec un mini arc-en-ciel quil passe à travers un deuxième prisme, sa conclusion est révolutionnaire : la couleur est dans la lumière et non dans le verre. Ainsi, la lumière blanche que lon voit est en réalité un mélange de toutes les couleurs du spectre visible par l'il. Il montre que la lumière colorée ne modifie pas ses propriétés par la séparation en faisceaux de couleurs et note que, indépendamment de savoir si les faisceaux de lumière sont reflétés, dispersés ou transmis, ils gardent toujours la même couleur (la fréquence ne change pas d'un milieu à l'autre). Ainsi, il fait observer que la décomposition de la lumière blanche est le résultat de l'interaction avec les objets qu'elle traverse et qu'elle contient en elle-même les couleurs. En 1704, il fait publier son traité Opticks dans lequel figurent sa théorie corpusculaire de la lumière, létude de la réfraction, la diffraction de la lumière et sa théorie des couleurs. Il y démontre que la lumière blanche est formée de plusieurs couleurs et déclare qu'elle est composée de particules ou de corpuscules. De plus, il ajoute que lorsqu'elle traverse un milieu plus dense, elle est réfractée par son accélération. À un autre endroit de son traité, il explique la diffraction de la lumière en l'associant à une onde. (source : Wikipedia) bel exemplaire, couverture à peine jaunie, infime trace de pliure au coin inférieur gauche du plat inférieur, la couverture est sinon impeccable, intérieur frais et propre, papier à peine jauni, exemplaire non coupé, cela reste un bel ouvrage, bien complet des 12 planches hors-texte d'un des plus importants traité d'optique (théorie corpusculaire de la lumière), même si les principaux travaux de Newton portent sur la gravitation, il s'agit d'un reprint de qualité, introduit par le mathématicien Maurice Solovine, 1875-1958, ami et principal traducteur en français d'Albert Einstein - Near fine copy of the 1995's reprint of the 1722's French Edition of Opticks, published by Montalant and translated by Coste, wrappers are fine, minor folding track on the corner of the bottom part, inside is fine, no markings, unopened copy, this 1955 reprint was introduced by Maurice Solovine, Mathematician and closed friend from Albert Einstein who actually translated most of his works in French. Complete of the 12 plates reproduced here as issue in nice folding plates, a very nice copy.

Mlle Royer, who Darwin described as 'one of the cleverest and oddest women in Europe' and wished 'had known more of natural history', added her own footnotes.
