Quatrième édition contenant The Rosciad, The Apology, Night, The Prophecy of famine, An Epistle to William Hogarth, The Ghost, The Conference, The Author, Gotham, The Candidate, The Farewell, The Times, Independence et Fragment of journey. Charles Churchill (1732–1764) était un poète et critique acerbe anglais. Il suit son père comme pasteur, vit un mariage malheureux et mène une vie de débauche. Il publie des critiques dans la revue de Smolett. Admirateur de Dryden, il devint avec Wilkes un fervent défenseur de la liberté de la presse et en explora les frontières. Provenance : de la bibliothèque de Jonathan Chetwood, Esq., parlementaire, avec son ex-libris gravé et un autre manuscrit sur le titre, et de celle de Remy G. Saisselin, avec son ex-libris. Bon exemplaire. ‎

‎1 volume in-12 (15 x 9,5 cm), veau brun moucheté (reliure de l’époque), dos à nerfs ornés et caissons fleuronnés, roulette à froid sur les coupes, ex-libris sur le contreplat, ex-dono manuscrit sur une garde, texte en anglais. 176 pages (complet). Coiffe accidentée, mors fendus, frottements angulaires, quelques rousseurs. État correct tout de même. Recueil incluant les œuvres principales de John Philips ainsi qu’une biographie et un poème d’éloge par Edmund Smith. Édition illustrée de 3 gravures hors texte par A. Walker. John Philips (1676-1709) était un poète anglais. Splendid Shilling, écrit en vers blancs dans le style de Milton, a été décrit par Joseph Addison comme « le plus beau poème burlesque de la langue anglaise », et a été salué par Pope. Il dépeignait les misères d'un débiteur sans le sou pour acheter du tabac, du vin, de la nourriture et des vêtements. Cyder, imitation des Géorgiques de Virgile, est son œuvre principale. Il contient de beaux passages descriptifs avec un compte rendu précis de la culture du pommier et de la fabrication du cidre. Bon exemplaire. ‎
