François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand, né à Saint-Malo, célèbre écrivain français de la première moitié du XIXème siècle, quitta la France en 1791 pour parcourir le Nouveau Monde, fuyant la Révolution. Pendant son voyage, il ébaucha notamment son poème Les Natchez (1826) puis revint en Europe en 1792 pour s’exiler en Angleterre. Chateaubriand tenta de montrer les beautés de la religion chrétienne, la véritable religion, qui avait été pervertie selon lui par les Lumières et la Révolution française. Volume de la Bibliothèque de la Pléïade N° 272. Édition établie, présentée et annotée par Maurice Regard.
