Alliant la retranscription presque immédiate de l'actualité politique et la réactivation d'une tradition poétique nationale, le poème Les lilas et les roses est une des pièces maîtresses de ce recueil, celles qui correspondent au choix du poète d'entrer dans la résistance. Si ce texte n'évoque que la France de l'exode et la capitulation française, les poèmes suivants font apparaître l'image de la patrie ravagée, celle du refus de quitter sa terre ou se veulent un hymne à la liberté.''
