En 1832, Eugène Delacroix accompagne la mission diplomatique du Comte de Mornay auprès du Sultan Abd-er-Rahman. Il séjournera près de six mois au Maroc, parcourant le pays de Tanger à Meknès. Il visitera également le sud de l’Espagne et l’Algérie lors de son retour en France. Ce voyage, unique aventure qui arrache Delacroix aux murs de son atelier, revêt une importance considérable. Véritable promoteur d’un Orient romantique dans les années 1920, Delacroix découvre la réalité farouche d’un monde exotique qui vient fortifier son imagination et constituer un répertoire inépuisable de formes et de couleurs auquel il se reportera toute sa vie. Ce livre fait une large place aux nombreux dessins exécutés au jour le jour par Delacroix, dans ses carnets, qui note ainsi chaque détail, chaque couleur. Il présente encore un choix significatif de tableaux inspirés du Maroc et en explique la genèse à travers deux des plus connus : "Les femmes d’Alger" et "Le Sultan Abd-er-Rahman".
