La vie de sainte Geneviève, née en 423, ne correspond pas à l'image naïve et réductrice de la jeune bergère gardant ses moutons sur la colline de Nanterre. Femme d'affaires avisée au sens politique hors norme, elle résista aux Huns d'Attila menaçant Paris. Franque d'origine, elle fut l'âme de la conversion du roi des Francs Clovis au christianisme et une actrice majeure de la naissance de la France autour de la basilique Saint-Denis. Dans un monde romain s'effondrant tragiquement sous les coups des "barbares", elle fut un repère d'une grande stabilité. Par cette biographie alerte, Joël Schmidt restitue à la sainte patronne de Paris sa juste densité politique et historique.
