"Né sous le règne de Napoléon III, mort sous le septennat de Vincent Auriol, Philippe Pétain, au long des quatre-vingt-quinze années de sa vie, connaît six régimes différents, dont l’un créé par lui, trois guerres franco-allemandes, dont l’une un peu gagnée par lui, reçoit les dignités les plus éclatantes, est porté à la tête de l’Etat dans les circonstances les plus dramatiques de notre histoire contemporaine et, après avoir subi le châtiment le plus infamant pour un maréchal de France, termine ses jours, emprisonné dans les casemates d’un fort d’une petite île vendéenne. Que fut-il donc cet homme, à la fois si aimé et si détesté, mais si chargé de symboles et si enrubanné de mythes que, quinze ans après sa mort, l’évocation de sa destinée dresse les uns contre les autres des Français également passionnés ? A cette question, l’auteur aspire à répondre.
