Une partie seulement du manuscrit laissé par M. Chesnelong, celle qui concernait sa mission à Froshdorf en 1873, avait été publiée sous le titre de “La Campagne monarchique d'octobre 1873”. Le petit-fils de M. Chesnelong a cru le temps venu d'en détacher aussi les chapitres relatifs à la fin de l'Empire et aux débuts de la 3e République, et on ne saurait trop le féliciter d'avoir eu cette pensée, car peu de lectures offrent un aussi vif intérêt. (...) Chesnelong raconte avec beaucoup d'intérêt les luttes parlementaires qui préparèrent le 24 mai 1873. Il faisait partie, en même temps que de la droite modérée, du groupe spécial dénommé « groupe des conservateurs n'appartenant à aucun groupe », dont le concours, tout entier et sans aucune exception, était indispensable pour renverser Thiers, s'il ne voulait pas adopter une politique de résistance au radicalisme nette et sans équivoque. La réunion tout entière décida de voter à l'unanimité contre le ministère, dût la crise ministérielle aller jusqu'à une crise gouvernementale. Le 24 mai «acte non de passion irréfléchie mais de préservation déjà tardive et d'autant plus nécessaire »
