La croisade (en fait, les croisades) fut une des grandes aventures du Moyen-Age. Elle est menée par des Chrétiens d'occident, puissants ou pauvres, avec comme but de s'assurer de la liberté des accès des lieux de pélerinage en Terre Sainte. Beaucoup de livres ont été écrits sur son déroulement militaire et politique mais assez peu sur les hommes qui sont partis sur ces terres lointaines. Nouvelle édition revue et augmentée. L'auteur dresse un état objectif de cette véritable société d'hommes déracinés divers dans leurs motivations, leurs buts et leurs aspirations. Régine Pernoud nous décrit leurs étonnements, leurs épreuves, leur adaptation et la manière dont ils réussirent à tenir pendant deux siècles face à un ennemi infiniment supérieur en nombre. C'est toute une page méconnue de notre histoire qui se révèle à nous.
