Entre 1902 et 1920, le général Laperrine entretient une correspondance régulière avec son ami le commandant Cauvet. Cent quarante-six de ses lettres sont conservées aux Archives d'outre-mer à Aix-en-Provence. Elles sont publiées ici pour la première fois. Dans cette correspondance privée, Laperrine n'est pas tenu d'adopter le style réservé propre aux courriers et rapports officiels. Aussi ces lettres sont-elles riches d'enseignements. Elles éclairent les véritables enjeux de cette période qui vit la France s'installer au Sahara central. Elles nous apprennent combien l'empirisme a largement présidé à cette conquête du Sahara et combien les principaux épisodes de cette histoire sont dus avant tout à la politique de " l'état de fait " impulsée par Laperrine et les siens. Elles révèlent également que de nombreuses divergences opposaient les hommes qui dirigeaient alors la politique saharienne de la France. Au-delà de simples rivalités personnelles, ces différends manifestent bel et bien des oppositions politiques qui apparaissent crûment dans cette correspondance. Autant de points recensés et analysés dans la longue introduction qui présente le contexte historique dans lequel s'inscrit cet échange épistolaire entre deux des principaux acteurs de cette époque.
