"Pendant plus d'un siècle et demi, le seul nom d'Astolphe de Custine (1790-1847) aura déchaîné fiel, sottise et vilenie. L'aristocrate? Nanti. L'homme? Répugnant. Le romancier? Inexistant. Le voyageur? Pressé. Le penseur? Penser, ce réactionnaire, spiritualiste de surcroît! A retenir tout au plus l'amphitryon _ car la "" fine fleur "" de ses contemporains s'est gobergée chez lui... _ et, à la rigueur, sa Russie en 1839, non pour sa valeur intrinsèque, évidemment, mais pour sa commodité contre _ peu importe qui _: probité fonctionnelle oblige. Avions-nous là une image fidèle du marquis? Ou bien l'involontaire autoportrait de son temps (et du nôtre)? Quatorze ans d'enquête scrupuleuse et passionnée, de recherches minutieuses permettent aujourd'hui de dessiner, preuves à l'appui, la véritable figure d'un être douloureux et secret, trop noble pour son époque, d'un écrivain libre, inclassable, gênant, gravement actuel, que Barbey, Baudelaire, Nietzsche... avaient déjà la faiblesse d'admirer, et quantité d'autres le bon goût de piller! L'amnésie volontaire des nations n'est pas forcément innocente; l'indépendance vis-à-vis de la médiocratie se paie à vie et à mort: le "" fameux "" marquis de Custine nous offre aussi cela, une intraitable leçon de dignité, d'exactitude.
