Cette exposition fut co-organisée par le musée d'Orsay et le Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York. Henry Havemeyer, industriel sucrier américain à la fin du XIXème siècle, et son épouse Louisine, étaient des amateurs d'art et des collectionneurs passionnés. Leur collection s'étendait des arts de l'Islam à la peinture du XIXème, en passant par les maîtres anciens, le mobilier, les objets d'art, et particulièrement la verrerie. Leur passion picturale se porta particulièrement sur les oeuvres de Courbet, Manet et Degas, mais aussi Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Monet, Pissaro et Sisley, dont les oeuvres purent être contemplées à l'occasion de cette exceptionnelle exposition. On put aussi y admirer un vitrail une coupe et 5 vases de Tiffany. Exemplaire à l'état neuf.
