Paris, Tériade, 1961. 2 volumes in-folio (420 x 322 mm) sous couvertures imprimées, reliures décorées de Paul Bonet, chemises et étuis. 42 LITHOGRAPHIES EN COULEURS dont le frontispice, 25 à pleine page et 16 à double page. Édition à 270 exemplaires sur Vélin d'Arches, celui-ci bien numéroté et signé à l'encre par Marc Chagall. Note historique et bibliographique : L’affection de Tériade pour Daphnis et Chloé est toute particulière puisque l’histoire se déroule sur son île natale, Lesbos. Marc Chagall lui apparaît naturellement comme l’illustrateur approprié pour cette pastorale et en restituer le plus fidèlement l’ambiance. La genèse du travail s’étala sur dix ans : Chagall, dont le souci fut d’abord d’intérioriser l’œuvre de Longus, voyagea en Grèce avec sa femme, une première fois pour réaliser les premières gouaches en 1952, puis une seconde fois en 1954, pour "corriger" ses impressions, et s’assurer que les œuvres reproduisaient l’expérience émotionnelle de ces paysages. Les lithographies sont exécutées sur quatre années à partir de 1957. Chagall, qui travaille avec Charles Sorlier aux Ateliers Mourlot, utilise 25 couleurs, et donc autant de pierres lithographiques, d’où la lenteur du processus, qui s’achève en 1961. Les teintes éclatantes et profondes et leurs multiples variations retranscrivent la lumière baignant les paysages parcourus, et donnent aux images leur force poétique. Correspondant aux épisodes de l’œuvre antique, elles constituent une œuvre indépendante, considérée comme l’un des sommets de l'illustration de Marc Chagall. - L'éditeur : Tériade est l’un des grands éditeurs du XXe siècle ; aux côtés de Skira, il fut le directeur artistique de l’importante revue Minotaure de 1932 à 1936, avant de fonder en 1937 les éditions Verve. Entre 1943 et 1975, il publie 27 livres illustrés, tous des monuments de l’histoire de l’art, dont : Jazz de Matisse (1947), Le Chant des Morts (1948) de Reverdy et Picasso (1948) et Paris sans fin de Giacometti (1969). La collaboration entre Chagall et Tériade donna naissance à cinq livres : Les Âmes Mortes (1948), les Fables (1952), la Bible (1956), Daphnis et Chloé (1961) et le Cirque (1967). "La beauté des nuits, cette qualité de bleu, qui n’appartient qu’aux rivages de la mer inspiratrice des Dieux, trouvent dans la palette du peintre une puissante traduction.
