Qui sont ces volontaires issus de la SS dénommés les Einsatzgruppen ("groupes d'intervention") ? A la suite de l'invasion de l'URSS en juin 1941 par la Wehrmacht, 3 000 hommes affectés sur le front de l'Est sont chargés d'exterminer les opposants au Reich et les Juifs, hommes, femmes, et enfants sans distinction. Près d'un million et demi de Juifs d'Europe de l'Est seront exécutés par ces commandos de la mort. Ces tueries par fusillades, commises avant la création des camps d'extermination, constituent le laboratoire de la "solution finale". Spécialiste international des crimes nazis, Ralf Ogorreck analyse dans cet ouvrage le recrutement, la formation et le modus operandi de ceux qui mirent en oeuvre la "Shoah par balles" dont on commence à peine à mesurer l'ampleur.
