‎Les chemins de fer métropolitains: Londres, New York, Philadelphie, Berlin, Vienne et Paris.‎

‎Paris A la Librairie Illustrée [1886] Première édition, dédicacée par l'auteur et accompagnée de deux lettres autographes signées. Une étude rare sur les chemins de fer urbains, rédigée quatorze ans avant l'ouverture de la première ligne du métro parisien, à une époque où Paris se demandait encore s'il fallait en construire un et comment s'y prendre. Figuier (18191894), le vulgarisateur scientifique français le plus prolifique de son époque, prend pour point de départ le Metropolitan Railway de Londres, qui a inauguré la première ligne de métro au monde en 1863. Il passe ensuite en revue les réseaux de Berlin et de New York, avec un chapitre consacré au pont de Brooklyn, puis consacre trois chapitres à Paris et aux projets rivaux alors en discussion, avant de conclure par des réflexions sur l'avenir des transports urbains. Son enthousiasme pour les nouveaux métros est manifeste, mais il accorde une attention égale aux lignes surélevées, aux ponts et aux chemins de fer de surface. Le texte est illustré de belles gravures et de plans de Londres, Berlin, Vienne et Paris, dont un plan du réseau parisien proposé, gravé par Perrin. Accompagné de deux lettres autographes signées par Figuier. La première (1 p. in-8, « Paris, le 30 nov. », probablement 1887) est adressée à Georges Decaux, directeur de la Librairie Illustrée, éditeur du présent ouvrage et de l'hebdomadaire de Figuier, *La Science illustrée*. Dans cette lettre, Figuier transmet son article sur la saccharine destiné à la revue et s'arrange pour faire venir un certain M. Baillot afin de finaliser les comptes rendus de la revue sur l'Institut. La seconde (4 p. in-8, « Paris, le 18 juin », envoyée depuis le 1, rue Newton, datable de 1866) est une belle lettre adressée à un collègue historien des sciences, dans laquelle il sollicite son avis sur Galilée. Figuier annonce la publication imminente de ses Vies des savants illustres, dont le premier volume consacré aux scientifiques de l'Antiquité devait paraître en octobre de la même année. Il décrit l'hiver qu'il a passé en Italie à rassembler des documents et des dessins sur Galilée à Florence, où il a fait la connaissance d'Eugenio Albèri, éditeur des Opere de Galilée, et critique les « détails fantaisistes » (« détails de fantaisie ») fournis par Joseph Bertrand. In-12 (180 × 120 mm ; 7 × 4Ÿ pouces). xii, 272 p., avec 35 planches dans le corps du texte et en annexe, dont 5 cartes. Relié par l'Atelier Laurenchet (signé) en demi-maroquin bordeaux avec coins, plats marbrés, dos à nerfs avec lettrage doré, mention d'imprimerie au pied. La jaquette illustrée d'origine et le dos ont été incorporés à la reliure. La jaquette est légèrement salie par la poussière, son dos a été restauré ; quelques légères rousseurs ici et là. Les lettres sont en très bon état. Un très bel exemplaire. Très rare. L'OCLC ne recense que sept exemplaires, tous conservés dans des institutions américaines (OCLC 11816585), et nous n'en avons trouvé aucun en France ni au Royaume-Uni, ni sur le marché ni aux enchères.‎

‎First edition, inscribed by the author and accompanied by two autograph letters signed. A scarce study of urban railways, written fourteen years before the first line of the Paris Métro opened, at the moment when Paris was still debating whether and how to build one. Figuier (18191894), the most prolific French populariser of science of his age, takes as his starting point London's Metropolitan Railway, which opened the world's first underground line in 1863. He then surveys the systems of Berlin and New York, with a chapter on the Brooklyn Bridge, and devotes three chapters to Paris and the rival schemes then under discussion, before closing with reflections on the future of city transport. His enthusiasm for the new underground railways is plain, but he gives equal attention to elevated lines, bridges and surface railways. The text is illustrated with fine engravings and with maps of London, Berlin, Vienna and Paris, including a map of the proposed Paris network, engraved by Perrin. With two autograph letters signed by Figuier. The first (1 p. in-8, "Paris 30 nov.", probably 1887) is addressed to Georges Decaux, head of the Librairie Illustrée, publisher of the present work and of Figuier's weekly La Science illustrée. In it Figuier delivers his article on saccharin for the journal and arranges to bring a M. Baillot to settle the journal's reports on the Institut. The second (4 pp. in-8, "Paris 18 juin", from 1 rue Newton, datable to 1866), is a fine letter to a fellow historian of science, asking for his notice on Galileo. Figuier announces the imminent publication of his Vies des savants illustres, whose first volume on the scientists of antiquity was to appear that October. He describes the winter he spent in Italy gathering documents and drawings on Galileo in Florence, where he came to know Eugenio Albèri, editor of Galileo's Opere, and takes a swipe at the "fanciful details" ("détails de fantaisie") given by Joseph Bertrand. In-12 (180 × 120 mm; 7 × 4Ÿ in.). xii, 272 pp., with 35 plates in and out of text, including 5 maps. Bound by Atelier Laurenchet (signed) in in maroon half morocco with corners, marbled boards, spine with raised bands lettered in gilt, imprint at foot. the original illustrated front wrapper and spine bound in. Wrapper a little dust-soiled, its spine restored; occasional light foxing. The letters are in fine condition. A very good copy. Very rare. OCLC records only seven copies, all in American institutions (OCLC 11816585), and we have traced none in France or the UK, nor any on the market or at auction. .‎

Cette photo de presse a été prise par Wildenberg le 1er septembre 1981. 20 000 manifestants avaient affronté la police lors d'une marche « Interdire la bombe à neutrons ». Arnaud de Wildenberg est un photographe de presse français. Il a travaillé avec l'agence Gamma de 1979 à 1981, prenant des photographies de points chauds à travers le monde. L'agence Gamma a été fondée en 1966 et a été absorbée par Hachette en 1999. Photographie en bon état propre avec les détails de l'agence et la description à l'arrière. 200 par 255 mm‎

This press photograph was taken by Wildenberg on 1st September 1981. 20.000 demonstrators had battled the police during a "Ban the Neutron Bomb" march. Arnaud de Wildenberg is a French press photographer. He worked with the Gamma Agency from 1979 to 1981, taking photographs from trouble spots around the world. The Gamma Agency was founded in 1966 and was absorbed by Hachette in 1999. Photograph in good, clean condition with agency details and description to the rear. 200 by 255mm (7Ÿ by 10 inches).
