"Cet ouvrage relate la vie de Hitler, de ses difficiles débuts viennois à son adhésion au « parti des travailleurs allemands » D.A.P. et à l’échec de la tentative de coup d’Etat de 1923. Cette période, dont on a beaucoup parlé, reste assez mal connue dans la mesure où les commentateurs, y compris Alan Bullock, ont eu grand-peine à éviter de projeter sur les années de jeunesse de Hitler l’opinion qu’ils avaient conçue de sa personne en examinant l’ensemble de sa redoutable carrière. L’ouvrage de W. Maser, très fouillé, évite cette illusion d’optique historique. Sa partie la plus neuve semble être celle où il démontre qu’à Vienne Hitler n’était pas le gueux et l’épave d’asile souvent dépeinte mais disposait de moyens décents d’existence. Le chapitre sur la Bavière après la première guerre mondiale est également excellent. L’auteur a eu l’heureuse idée d’annexer à son livre le « programme du NSDAP »."
