Il Pangermanismo fù un movimento il cui scopo era l’unificazione di tutte le genti di lingua tedesca. Sin dal 1848 era sorto nel Parlamento di Francoforte un contrasto sulla soluzione da dare al problema unitario fra i Piccoli Tedeschi (Kleinedeutsche), che auspicavano l’unificazione sotto la direzione della Prussia con l’esclusione dei Tedeschi soggetti all’Impero asburgico, e i Grandi Tedeschi (Grossdeutsche), che volevano l’unificazione sotto la guida degli Asburgo. Uscito sconfitto, il programma grande-tedesco rinacque verso la fine del 19° sec. con la costituzione dell’Alldeutscher Verband e dell’Alldeutsche Vereinigung contro le minoranze alloglotte nell’Impero tedesco e austriaco. Si ebbe anche un p. dottrinale e razzista che dalla proclamazione dell’ineguaglianza delle razze giungeva alla esaltazione di un’unica razza, pura e perfetta, nella quale si volle identificare quella germanica. Antesignani di tale dottrina furono il conte J.-A. de Gobineau e H.S. Chamberlain. Delle loro idee si nutrirono il nazionalsocialismo e il suo teorico A. Rosenberg.
